This coffee comes to us from a collection of 200 farmers, all who happen to be widows taking over the farm after the death of their husbands.  Kardon & Yulinda, the husband and wife producing team, work with each farmer to help with any training needed after their husbands pass.  Kardon & Yulinda then receives wet parchment from each farmer and further dry and hull it down to green beans prior to exporting.

Wet-hulled coffee has a unique flavor in the cup. The process of wet-hulling is only practiced in Indonesia. Sumatra has the highest rainfall of any coffee exporting country, and has high sustained humidity, making drying more difficult. Farmers pulp, ferment in bags for 12 hours, then dry for 3 to 4 days before all coffee is collected by the producer.  The producer then "wet hulls" the wet coffee down to green beans and patio dries to prepare for export. That higher moisture content present in the beans can lend to the classic earthy flavors Sumatras are known for.

Sumatra, is the sixth largest island in the world, with a landmass larger than Washington State and Oregon combined. With a population of 58 million people and just one port of export, coffee from Sumatra has often traveled a long way even before being loaded onto the boat; sometimes up to 375 miles through large mountains and over dirt roads.

Incredible Taste

My first sip of the coffee I was struck by how unique and different the taste was from any light roast I have had before. I am still trying to put my finger on the tasting notes (I try not to look at the bag and cheat :)), but the aroma and taste to me are sweet and earthy. I heartily recommend this if you are in the mood to try something different.
