Cup of Excellence, Rwanda 2013 Trip Report

Zoka’s founder, Jeff Babcock, was (again) invited to attend the Cup of Excellence (COE) competition in Rwanda earlier this month. In addition to helping an international team of judges grade some of the finest coffees in the world, Jeff got to spend time with fellow direct trade coffee enthusiasts and to get to know the people in the community from which this amazing coffee comes.

As part of their desire to leave behind more than money, the group of COE judges also made a collective gift to the community of badly needed, beautiful new desks for their local school. Below you can see some images of the desks being brought in, in the classrooms, and the happy students and community.

Zoka’s focus on family direct trade coffee is about more than just getting the world’s best coffees to our customers. It’s about knowing the farmers we buy from, the communities they support, and the difference that direct trade makes in their lives.

At the end of the competition, there was an amazing party with food, drumming, dancing, singing and celebration. Below you’ll find some images and videos. In early October, you’ll be able to order some of the coffee’s he tasted, and bought. Tell us how to get in touch with you at the bottom of this page and we’ll let you know when they’re available.
