Notes on Yemen Mocca Sanani

The Old World is still alive in this traditional coffee from Yemen Mocca Sanani. Known as the birthplace of coffee commerce, the port of Mocca in Yemen has been exporting coffee since the 17th century. The natural processing of the coffee allows fruit to dry on the bean and impart sweet, mellow spice and chocolate notes.

Yemen Mocca Sanani is popular with adventurous coffee aficionados. We roast this coffee to a Full City to accentuate its sweet chocolately notes and creamy mouthfeel. Serve this coffee filter brew, or try it in your home espresso machine. It is transformed when warm milk is added- cocoa, hazelnuts and winy fruit become more obvious.

Origin Notes

Yemen is known historically as the first country to market and export cultivated coffee. Traditionally this coffee has been difficult to characterize in terms of flavor profile. Back in the day, it was common practice to blend natural Ethiopian coffees with a Yemen crop or substitute it all together. Many other countries in the world have established thriving coffee crops from Yemen's rootstock or seedlings. Can any of these coffees be called a Yemen? A true Yemen is, consequently, a matter of tradition. Some may argue that Yemen coffees are notoriously mislabeled, but in reality, standards or this coffee were established long ago and can sometimes defy modern practices of attribution.

Mocca refers to the port in Yemen from which coffee was originally exported. In the 17th century, Portuguese, Dutch, and French sailors and merchants quickly developed a love for this new rich elixir, and became responsible for spreading it to parts of Europe and eventually into the New World. Many coffees, (including those from Ethiopia) that emanated from Mocca, became known as "Mocca" coffee, and soon the word was used as a synonym for coffee.

Zoka's Yemen is an authentic Yemen, traceable to the region of Sanani. Set in the western Yemeni mountain range, Sanani coffee grows on rainy terraces at an altitude of 3000 feet. The coffee is naturally processed after harvest in the tradition of the region, in combination with contemporary environmental best practices.

Cupping Notes

Winy, malty and distinctly fruity with red-berry and blueberry notes. Fine, balanced body and acidity. Wild nutty, chocolatey and creamy aftertaste - a true old world, rustic coffee.
