Notes on Kenya AA Mutwewathi Estate

This amazing Kenyan is brand new to Zoka Coffee Roaster & Tea Company. Grown along the foothills of Mount Kenya with perfect climate, altitude, deep red volcanic soil, production and processing methods and strict standards. These coffees have the absolute perfect balance of body and acidity with that extra richness and intense black-currant flavor, and are often rated Class 1 or 2 out of the 10 different classification ratings set by the Coffee Board of Kenya.

Origin Notes

The country of Kenya is acclaimed in the coffee world as the “red wine” of coffees. Easily recognizable for its ripe red fruit and berry nuance, these prized coffees undergo a unique auction format before they can be exported. The double A refers to the size and grade of the flat beans from Kenya. Much like our selection of eggs at the supermarket, double A is the cleanest, largest, and most uniform that Kenya has to offer. Kenya has one of the best-organized coffee industries in the world. The coffee is painstakingly cupped by quality-assurance experts before it goes to auction. They ensure that nothing falls below their strict standards.

Kenya coffees are traditionally processed in the wet method. After the beans are de-pulped of their fruit, they are fermented to clean the remaining mucilage from the parchment. After washing thoroughly, the drying practice used is special to Kenya. Coffee in its parchment is spread evenly on raised tables stretched with woven mats. These mats have been termed “Kenya beds”. Kenya beds allow fresh air to circulate around and under the beans during the drying stage. This drying method has been used in other producing countries where small yields and isolated lots are in high demand.

Cupping Notes:

This central Kenyan coffee’s light roast offers a complex and intriguing blend of macadamia nut and spice mixed with candied citrus flavors. Beautiful low tones of lemon, grapefruit, plum, currant and chocolate are found within this amazing cup.
